ALN Newsletter 18 May 2021

This week’s ALN Th@4 pm ET on May 20th will feature a chat with Tacoma and Jennifer Zach, co-founders of Uberlytics and MentorAMP conducted by Mike Bordenaro, ALN Director, Communications. As always, see more below in People and register at this link.

The “Equity through Innovative Asset Management” webcast with former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley on May 25, 4 pm Eastern will also feature Grant Thornton’s Tim Luzano who will be presenting publicly available transit information from a major U.S. metropolitan area that serves as the basis for a GT-created, web-based, interactive model. The model helps identify equity issues and encourages ways to address them. Register at this link.

The Grant Thornton Transit Equity Model allows exploration of communities, their levels of income, diversity and transit service. Much more is possible to allow clear and equitable transit asset management decisions.

Asset Leadership in Action

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer outlined her legal actions to stop the pumping of oil and natural gas under the Straights of Mackinaw in an editorial last week available at this link. In the piece, Governor Whitmer clearly describes the risk from the underwater assets, explains that alternative approaches are available, and how the State of Michigan is planning for intended and unintended consequences from requiring assets to be disposed due to their financial and environmental risk. Political affiliation alignment is not needed to understand this high-level asset leadership in action.

Data is an Asset – Video Overview

In 2016, Kimon Onuma, President of ONUMA, Inc., an ALN Patron Member, led an ALN Information Management Work Group that stated, “Data is an Asset” and described how to treat it as such. While we have noted this before, last week, Mr. Onuma was part of a web forum and provided a 14-minute overview of a 30-year approach to information management that has been supported by multiple federal agencies, including the DoD, VA, State and USCG. It is a concise and precise description of how organizations have benefitted from an advanced approach to treating data as an asset. It indicates what an information management response can be to ISO 55001 7.5. The presentation is available as a video at this link.

Ideas

Pass the Servicemember Parental Leave Equity Act

Introduced in the U.S. House last week, the Servicemember Parental Leave Equity Act would provide up the same parental leave rights as recently issued to civilian federal staff. Service members would annually receive 12 weeks of paid leave for a birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child. This is purposefully editorializing – servicemembers deserve nothing less than what is given to federal civilian employees.
