People

Gary Merrow, MBA, has been Vice President of Facilities for the Atlanta Airlines Terminal Company for more than four years. During that time, he led the organization achieving an ISO 55001 certification for critical electrical infrastructure and expanded the scope to include more facility assets for a recertification process. Mr. Merrow was an Adjunct Professor for College of Architecture’s graduate program for Integrated Facilities Management at Georgia Tech for 12 years before COVID struck in 2020. He was a Chief Master Sargent in the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 22 years. Mr. Merrow always brings a wealth of knowledge to the ALN community and we look forward to learning what is top-of-mind to him at this time.

Equity through Innovative Asset Management

Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley provided such a wealth of information and leadership insights at last week’s web program “Equity through Innovative Asset Management,” that we are immediately recommending it. Governor O’Malley was joined by Grant Thornton’s Tim Luzano, ALN Organizational Member Cecilia Mowatt and ALN CEO Jim Dieter. After an overview on ALN’s Equity position by Ms. Mowatt, Governor O’Malley’s talk on use of technology to improve equity and Mr. Luzano’s excellent technology-for-equity demonstration, Mr. Dieter led an exciting discussion. ALN supporter Hugh Sinclair, Asset Manager for the Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission, was brought in as a guest and engaged Governor O’Malley with thought provoking questions. Many thanks to ALN Organizational Member Grant Thornton for co-hosting the event. See the entire program at this link. Highlight videos will be released soon.

Ideas

“Smarter Government”

Smarter Government is both what we need and the title of Governor Martin O’Malley’s book on the use of technology and the advanced processes it enables to better achieve the mission of federal, state and local governments. The sub-head is “How to Govern for Results in the Information Age”, which is another way of saying – Data is an Asset and it needs to be managed in a structured way to achieve mission goals. The book has 14 chapters addressing topics such as “A New Way of Governing”, “When Disaster Strikes”, “Improving our Education”, “Policing”, “Restoring Our Waters”, “The Path Ahead” and more. The ALN is launching a Book Discussion Club focused on “Smarter Government.” ALN Industry Asset Leadership Boards will be involved in the discussions related to their area of expertise. The web-based discussions will be coordinated by Mike Bordenaro, ALN Director, Communications. While the discussion will be web-based, it is possible for your organization to host in-person gatherings in safe environments, if desired. Of Note

John B. Wyatt III, J.D., is Professor of Finance, Real Estate and Law, Coordinator of Contract Management Programs, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona in the College of Business Administration.

Dr. Wyatt has worked diligently to establish a university-level course on personal property management titled, “Property Professionals. FRL 3293: Legal and Contract Management Aspects of Federal Government Contract Property, Basics of Contract Property & Asset Management With a Twist (Law).”

The course will be available to Cal Poly students already enrolled at the school. The course brings asset management to a new level and Dr. Wyatt is to be commended for his service to the industry.

The ALN is proud to have guest speakers involved in the course. Participating will be Jim Dieter, ALN CEO; ALN Board Members and Senior Fellows Richard Culbertson and Jack Kelly; and, Lindsay Ziegler, Partner of the Andrew James Advisory Group, an ALN organizational member.

All the best to Dr. Wyatt, the students and the many guest speakers. We look forward to reporting on the course and how it evolves.
