Line-of-Sight Newsletter 5 March 2024

The National Property Management Association established March as National Asset Management Awareness Month – and we are in full support of the concept. Below in Upcoming Events is a list of NPMA activities. The ALN is rising to the occasion with a visit to Capitol Hill later this week and meeting with the staff of U.S. Senators in web meetings later this month.

We are also renewing the ALN National Asset Leadership Strategy and starting it off this week on the ALN Th@3 pm ET web program in a discussion with Jack Kelly, who was with OMB for 36 years. See more below in People and Ideas.

We are also happy to share a recent DoD memo that prominently mentions Asset Management. See more below in Sources.

People

Jack Kelly, ALN Board Member and ALN Senior Fellow, was critical in the creation of the
ALN National Asset Leadership Strategy
. He has also been deeply involved in the US TAG’s contributions to ISO 55011, which provides a “toolkit” on asset management policy creation for governments. Mr. Kelly will be joining us to discuss how governments can use existing content to inform asset management policy creation that dramatically improves organizational outcomes. We will also discuss steps the U.S. Federal Government can take to benefit from a National Asset Leadership Strategy.

DoD Resiliency (and AM) Memo
The
Honorable Kathleen Hicks, U.S. Undersecretary of Defense
, issued a Department of Defense
Memo on
Resilient and Healthy Defense Communities
last month. Asset Management figures prominently in the memo as noted in this excerpt.
“Transform how we manage our portfolio
In addition to optimizing the size and mix of our asset base, we will adopt an asset management strategy that improves performance and places our building and facilities portfolio on a more sustainable financial path.” Thank you to Jack Dempsey for informing us of this significant development in U.S. Asset Management.

Ideas

Participate in the National Strategy
Discuss the actions that can lead to the creation of a U.S. National Asset Leadership Strategy. Join the ALN this Friday 8 March for a noon No-Host lunch at Talay Thai,
406 First St SE, Washington, D.C. After meeting with legislative staff on Friday morning, we will plan steps to introduce activities and proceedings that will elevate a discussion of Asset Management to the awareness of the U.S. Federal Government as one organization. Building on existing work spearheaded by Jim Dieter, ALN CEO and Chair, ALN Board Member Moshe Nelson, Partner, Guidehouse, and others, we will begin laying out the legislative meetings, association partnerships, position papers and other tasks needed to fully leverage asset management in the federal government.
